Abscess Drainage and Treatment
Abscess drainage is the procedure of draining the pus inside an abscess through a small incision, after local anesthesia has been applied to the area.
After abscess drainage, the cavity from which the pus was drained must be irrigated and cleaned, and antibiotic treatment should be started. This procedure is important to prevent the infection from spreading and to relieve pain quickly.
When Is Abscess Drainage Necessary?
- Severe pain and swelling caused by a tooth or gum
- Localized redness and tenderness together with a build-up of pus
- Infection symptoms such as fever and general fatigue
- Infection developing after an untreated cavity or trauma
The Procedure
After local anesthesia is applied to the area, a small incision is made and the pus inside the abscess is drained. The cavity is cleaned by irrigating it with saline, and a small drainage tube may be placed if necessary.
Aftercare
After the procedure, the dentist starts antibiotic treatment. Using pain relievers and paying attention to oral hygiene speeds up healing. If symptoms persist, root canal treatment or extraction of the tooth may be needed.
