Wisdom Tooth
The wisdom tooth, or third molar, is one of the three molars found in each quadrant of human dentition. It is the tooth located furthest back among the three. The wisdom tooth usually erupts between the ages of 17-25. Most adults have four wisdom teeth, one in each quadrant. There may be fewer or more than four; for example, extra teeth are called supernumerary teeth. When a wisdom tooth remains impacted, it can also affect other teeth that are still developing.
As a result, they are extracted whether or not this happens. The wisdom tooth has long been recognised as a source of problems and continues to cause trouble as the most commonly impacted tooth in the human mouth. Impacted wisdom teeth are classified according to their direction, depth of impaction, the amount of space available for the tooth to erupt, and the amount of soft tissue or bone covering them. This classification structure allows doctors to calculate the likelihood of impaction-related infections and complications that may be seen if the tooth is extracted.
Wisdom teeth are also classified according to the presence of symptoms and discomfort. Treatment of an impacted wisdom tooth is the same as treatment of any impacted tooth. If the tooth is impacted, treatment may be limited to removing the infected tissue over the impaction, extraction of the tooth, or coronectomy.
