Orthodontic Jaw (Palatal) Expander
A jaw expander is a fixed or removable orthodontic appliance placed on the palate to slowly and gradually widen the upper jaw. It is usually fixed to the upper jaw, though removable models may sometimes be preferred.
Who Is It Suitable For?
- Children and young patients with a narrow upper jaw
- Those with a crossbite problem
- Patients with mouth breathing and breathing difficulties
- Cases that need space created in the jaw before braces treatment
How Does It Work?
A screw on the appliance is turned slightly at regular intervals (usually daily), gradually widening the upper jawbone. This slow, controlled process opens the growth line at the centre of the palate.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
The expansion phase is usually completed within a few weeks to a few months; the appliance is then kept in the mouth a while longer to maintain the result (stabilisation period).
