Dental Implant Removal Surgery
The surgical removal of a dental implant is called explantation. The implant is removed from the jawbone.
Dental implants are generally titanium posts that replace the tooth root. They may need to be removed in cases such as infection, loosening, fracture, or bone loss.
When Is Implant Removal Necessary?
- In the presence of progressive infection around the implant (peri-implantitis)
- When the implant becomes loose or fails to fuse with the bone
- If the implant fractures or is damaged
- When significant loss is observed in the surrounding bone tissue
The Procedure
Local anesthesia is applied to the area beforehand. The implant is carefully removed from the jawbone using a surgical method. Additional procedures may be applied to support the bone tissue if necessary.
Healing After the Procedure
Mild swelling and tenderness after removal resolve within a few days. Following the dentist's recommended care and check-up appointments supports the healing process.
