Laser Teeth Whitening
Laser teeth whitening is a fast, controlled whitening method based on activating a professional whitening gel, applied in the clinic, with a special laser or high-intensity light source. Light energy helps the hydrogen peroxide in the gel penetrate discolouration in the tooth enamel more effectively, helping achieve a noticeable lightening of shade in a single session.
How Is Laser Whitening Applied?
Before starting the procedure, the gums and soft tissues are isolated with a protective barrier. A special whitening gel containing a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide is applied to the tooth surfaces, and this gel is activated at set intervals (typically in 10-15 minute applications) with a laser or LED light source. The entire procedure, including preparation, takes an average of 45-60 minutes in a single session.
How Many Sessions Are Needed?
Laser teeth whitening gives a noticeable result in a single session for most patients. However, depending on the intensity of the discolouration, the dentist may recommend a programme of 1-2 sessions. Achieving results in a much shorter time compared to classic at-home or weekly in-office whitening is one of the most important advantages of the laser method.
What Is the Difference from Classic Whitening?
Both methods use a whitening gel containing similar concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. In classic in-office whitening, the gel is left on the teeth to take effect, while in the laser method the gel is activated with light energy; this speeds up the oxidation process, allowing faster results in fewer sessions.
Who Can and Cannot Have It Applied?
- Not recommended for patients under 16 years of age.
- Not applied to pregnant or breastfeeding patients.
- Patients with excessive tooth sensitivity or untreated gum disease need these issues resolved first.
- Teeth with incomplete decay and filling care must receive the necessary treatments before whitening.
The patient's suitability for laser whitening is assessed by the dentist through an oral examination carried out before the procedure.
Aftercare
After laser whitening, it is recommended to avoid tea, coffee, red wine, cola and dark-coloured food, as well as smoking and coloured mouthwash/toothpaste, for the first 24-48 hours. A mild, temporary sensitivity that can last 1-2 days may occur after the procedure; this resolves on its own.
