Periodontology
Periodontology is a branch of dentistry that studies the anatomy, physiology and histology of the soft and hard tissues surrounding the teeth; it investigates the diseases that occur in these tissues and provides for the treatment of these diseases and the maintenance of the health achieved as a result of treatment.
Gum disease generally begins with gingivitis (gum inflammation), showing itself through bleeding while brushing, redness and swelling. If left untreated, it can progress to a more advanced condition called periodontitis, in which the bone and tissues supporting the teeth are also affected.
The treatment approach is determined according to the stage of the disease; in the early stage, professional scaling and root planing together with organising home care is generally sufficient, while a more comprehensive treatment plan may be required in advanced cases. The definitive treatment method is determined after examination and assessment.
